Don't let "Drowners" remove your baptism call!

Dear friends, I should have probably warned you about an additional problem that happens every time someone considers doing something for Jesus Christ.."Drowners"- people who will sabotage you in your decision that you have made. These "Drowners" come in very direct forms saying comments to you such as: -How can you consider leaving your children while going to Peru? -Don't you know there are many people in ..."Topeka, Oakland, Kansas ...etc." that need your help? -Couldn't you just send your money? Then there are the indirect 'Drowners" saying these things: -Did you hear that in Lima there is a high rate of crime? -Or about the new story of the missionary who died in the bus accident in rural Guatemala? I call these folks "Drowners" because they are drowning your baptism calls. All of us who are baptized are called to go into the world and make disciples of all people (Matthew 28:19-20). We are to follow Jesus'

Waiting with God in the dentist Chair

Today I went to the dentist in hopes he would see my chipped tooth and schedule a different day to do the work. Instead as luck would have it he looked in my mouth and decided a root canal, and another tooth would need a filling. I gathered my nerve and stayed in the chair. For those of you who do not understand my fear let me just paint for you what dentistry was like in my childhood. When I went to the dentist in rural Michigan, my dentist did not say anything other than bark commands. I am guessing as a former Army dentist that is what he was use to. But for a small child it was scary. Worse than that he didn't use pain reliever of any sort when doing fillings. My luck there was plenty of those. It wasn't until college that I realized that there was a better way, but by then the fear of dentist had permanently been etched in my mind, body and spirit. So when I sat in that dentist chair, all those old feelings, came back even though I know logically my dentist is awe

Grief is upon me

Grief is upon me today. It accompanied me down the stairs into the kitchen. I looked out the window and saw the hawk; in the tree hiding in the foggy damp air. Grief appears like the hawk did, without warning, and sneaky. The grief I feel is not one thing, like the fog it is many things. Wet and damp everywhere, I try to wipe it off but find another spot. I sit down and the place I sit is wet and heavy. Then I learn, if I wait, the sun will find me. Warm me up, fill me with light, give me some sense of where I am, who I am. The sun will come eventually, but I must wait. Today I wait.
